Here is the question: As a salon owner is your business working for you or are working for it! Are you building the right team creating a brand identity?

Salon Inspiration comes from an understanding of the BASICS that drive our industry forward to greater successes. Salon inspiration comes from a willingness to open up your mind embrace change and new challenges. To make change happen.


I would like to look at each of these area’s one at a time so we can see how they are all connected for me they encompass every piece of the that jig saw puzzle we form to create a picture of our Vision one that reflects our values and best represents the salon Brand culture and ethos!


B= Business.

We are all in business either as a salon and or Spa owner or as a stylist working in a salon . Odd you may think but you me stylist when working we are the product its the service we deliver the skill our creativity that keeps our clients coming back.The salon owner provides the venue the surroundings that in many cases make this possible, however we are all equally responsibly for our selves.

A salon owner has to maintain standards show leadership and yes make and take some hard decisions. Formulate a strategy for success share their vision innovate and inspire. A stylist working in a salon has to be a team player. To be successful in either case one has to be committed open to facing challenges be forward thinking.


A=Artistic or having artistry

We as stylists/ hairdressers are artistic creative we have vision we can solve problems offer solutions. However  we still need to stay  current with trend and techniques we have to have an open mind an be willing to embrace and adapt to market trends fashion an style’s. Artistic creative visionary !



Yes we are all in sales. We are the product so we sell our selves our skills our services. We recommend products in the consultation. We are in the service industry and in sales, don’t ever kid your self that you are not in sales or tell your self that selling is not for you. To succeed as a salon owner and as stylist you have to embrace sales. Sales through knowledge, sales through recommendation its easy sales through believing in the services and products is easy ! If you cannot sell you will not succeed!



I love this one. We have to constantly ask question seek out answers. Gain new knowledge knowledge is power. Be on top of whats new exciting innovative, beware of new products the good the bad the safe the not so safe. Stay inspired through learning new things. Strive to be to the go to person. Research, use social media, join professional discussion groups. To learn is to grow! Always ask the Why !


“We now have all this new found information” what do we do with it ! We share it we communicate it to others. How through the consultation process through interaction with other stylists through mentoring. Through sharing in social net works. If you are lacking in your communication skills in delivering that perfect consultation seek out help. Communication is the key to success . How can we develop lasting relation ships build on trust and respect if we cannot articulate or communicate properly ! A skill to have a skill to master.



Yes as I said at the beginning all connected ! All of the above come under the banner of what we do what we deliver day after day to each and every client. Service !Make no mistake if you don’t like people don’t like the idea of giving service how every creative you might be you will not succeed  as salon stylist unless you embrace the concept of Service delivering that unique ultimate experience to your clients.


Salon Service.

Stylist service. It matters not at this point whether you are the salon owner or a stylist on the floor we come together to deliver our services. To service our clients to listen to their concerns to offer solutions. To recommend a new look, a style, a  new course of action. To recommend products to maintain and enhance these looks and styles. Its all connected we are working together sharing a vision. Building our business one client at a time.

”Reputation. Recommendation. Retention”. 
It’s not built on that constant looking for new clients it’s looking after what you have! It’s investing in your self and your business and those around you.


Our industry is in constant change and is sometimes criticised. For lacking vision in some areas. However there is an ever growing body of professionals. That have a firm commitment to our industry, they have a passion for change, to raise standards through education and sharing. Leadership, education and team incentives.Will over time and with commitment give any individual that ability to do exceptional work and to be more creative. Leadership and management help create an amazing work environment for all concerned. So key for success for all concerned.
This journey. This career, is wonderful – Challenging. Inspiring and yes can and will be hard work. but the rewards are worth all the effort.

Are you driver or passenger !

 There are no guarantees in life and ones career and career choice is no different thing happen and its how we deal with them that defines us. Jobs change relationships come and go the one thing that remains after training is our skill both hands on creative and the ones we learn about people and communication about caring about being a team player. Constantly developing new skills staying current is so very important.



I also think that we need to always look at the Why. Ask the question Why are we in business whats it for? OrWhy do we want to go into to business what is success? Why do I suggest this I think by asking and exploring the why we get to the motive behind why we want to be in business what is true success. Why the will also help us to understand our true values this in turn helps us to follow the path to the success we want  and desire. It will help us to surround ourselves with the right team those who share our values and vision.


Remember. Salon success. Stylist success. Business success are all linked together it’s Team success. Its never about any destination only ever about a journey taking the right people on that journey makes it enjoyable maybe even fun!
