Hairdressing is it a career journey to have?

As I reflect back at all the changes from the days of apprenticeship low wages and dreams of success todays stylists and opportunities the expectation of young people the demands and expectation from employers.

I question my self. Would I do it all again knowing what I know now ?? Honestly! Yes ! Here’s why. Although in the early days being a trainee was hard work and not very rewarding. As I reflect on the training those peers that i worked under the skills they shared with me. The ethic’s that were instilled in me have stood in very good stead!

The opportunities that a career spanning well over 30 has afforded me has been worth any initial sacrifices made. One can never foresee the future or its out come. We have goals and vision and we are all solely responsible for the choices we make when opportunity arise .The only thing that holds any of us back is ourselves out own fears and our own questioning of are we worthy can we do it.

What I have learned is that we have to take up new challenges face our fears if we don’t understand something or don’t think we can do something do it any way and learn. Having learned we have to be willing to share our skills and our experiences. We cannot protect others from making their choices and the possibility of mistakes for that is their journey to take their or our lesson to learn. We can only share what we know and who we are.

For anyone contemplating a career as a stylists its essential that you talk with season stylists understand the career you are entering into understand what working is a service industry. . Understand the career possibilities. Chose the right training be it an apprenticeship or college /academy. Understand that dealing with people can be demanding being a team player has it challenges. There is not quick way to become the best you can be it takes time and commitment. I stared my career at just 16 years of age and did an apprenticeship in London starting in Chelsea and then finishing my training in Mayfair London.

Chose to work with  people you respect and admire ones who will share their skills and knowledge with you mentor you. My own career has seen me managing salon in Chelsea in the early 80’s to being a director an share holder of a salon to owning my own all before the age 30. To then trying a new carer path only to then become a stylist platform artist and educator. With many speed bumps along the way I consider life a seeing like a game of snakes and ladders. So its all about moving forward and taking risks and being prepared to hit a snag go back to move forward !

There are no guarantees in life and ones career and career choice is no different thing happen and its how we deal with them that defines us. Jobs change relationships come and go the one thing that remains after training is our skill both hands on creative and the ones we learn about people and communication about caring about being a team player. Constantly developing new skills staying current is so very important. Making new connection keeping up with old ones being challenged by other in both thinking and creativity.

I also think that we need to always look at the Why. Ask the question Why are we in business whats it for? Or Why do we want to go into to business what is success? Why do I suggest this I think by asking and exploring the why we get to the motive behind why we want to be in business what is true success. Why the will also help us to understand our true values this in turn helps us to follow the path to the success we want  and desire. It will help us to surround ourselves with the right team those who share our values and vision.
