Salon products inventory and indeed retail stock are so very important in salon both for profitability and also for the continued reliability of products when delivering chemical services. As a salon owner you have to balance cost of product quality education these then reflect directly into pricing and so salon brand and the type of clients that are your target market.

 

 

Over the years one big area for saving or controlling that I have observed is wastage of products both in the mixing of formula’s but also just products in general over time this adds up an scan cost a salon greatly. I also think that unnecessary wastage shows lack of respect to the salon,its brand and culture and the team. Choosing the right products is not easy the staff have to be on board with it and its huge investment in both time and money so make sure when choosing or switching you do your home work first.

 

Have demonstrations find out about salon support and continue dedication. Practice inventory control, have  a policy for salon wastage, by keeping good client records you can over time see what products is being used and whats being wasted.  How do you measure your colour > Eye balling is not very accurate it? Weigh it, measure it ? All over time will save product. Make sure every one is aware of the different mixing ratio’s for products it not a generic rule for all! When buying colour look at the tube size and mixing ration cheap colour in a smaller tube with a one to one mixing ratio is not cheap colour? Application how does the product work how much is required to cover the hair and do its job sometimes less is more ?

 

 

Just like every thing we do as Stylists in the salon, self employed, freelance, chair renter, mobile. We are the product how we chose how we present our selves. The consultation is when we recommend the products we ourselves believe in! Its not Selling if we are recommending its doing our job properly. What we chose to recommend will be different for everyone. The key is to know and understand we are in the service business and we do sell for living.

*Is it the packaging?

*Is it smell?

*Is it cost?

As a retail product when marked up will it be profitability? Is it an all natural earth and environment saving product? How do you decide. Do you trust the sales Rep?

This is big business: you have to get it right on so many levels!

*How much can you mark it up?

*Will it sell? Does it have appeal?

*Do the staff like and support this product?

*Is the support education good?

Will your staff support the product do they have or are they willing to get the training on the products to a level of being able to educate the client. to be able to recommend with confidence?

How much stock do you have to carry? It’s so easy to get sucked in remember many product lines change packaging to re invent it and increase future sales. If you carry to much stock you may get left with old product! Carry only enough stock for a month at a time.Try to pay on 30 days and this way your don’t have money sitting on the shelf. Get staff involved, pay fair commission or incentive. Don’t mark up so much that it cannot sell. Stay on top of stock at all times do not let your friendly sales rep do the ordering for you!!!

It does take allocating some time. it’s not a quick fix magic pill that does all the work for you. It encourages you. To look at what your doing, why and how. It discuses how to change things look at things and issues in a positive light. Very easy to follow and listen to highly recommended . Conclusion
This journey. This career, is wonderful – Challenging. Inspiring and yes can and will be hard work. but the rewards are worth all the effort.

There are no guarantees in life and ones career and career choice is no different thing happen and its how we deal with them that defines us. Jobs change relationships come and go the one thing that remains after training is our skill both hands on creative and the ones we learn about people and communication about caring about being a team player. Constantly developing new skills staying current is so very important.

I also think that we need to always look at theWhy.Ask the question Why are we in business whats it for? Or Why do we want to go into to business what is success? Why do I suggest this I think by asking and exploring the why we get to the motive behind why we want to be in business what is true success. Why the will also help us to understand our true values this in turn helps us to follow the path to the success we want  and desire. It will help us to surround ourselves with the right team those who share our values and vision.

Remember. Salon success. Stylist success. Business success are all linked together it’s Team success. Its never about any destination only ever about a journey taking the right people on that journey makes it enjoyable maybe even fun!
