The Hair salon.Brand. Image.Reputation.

We all work so hard to create a brand that says who we are. We create and image that projects our vision and supports our brand. We work to turn our vision into a reality. We work relentlessly to build our reputation. We start off with such high expectation. We believe and trust we will be a success. We have a strategy we have the focus so what causes us to lose focus get distracted sometimes get derailed. What causes our vision to some how get lost? Lack of focus lack of attention.Wrong choices bad decisions! Hum.

Our brand as a salon and business is our identity its how we market ourselves its that trading name we strive to establish as one to be trusted. That image of how we are seen by others is so important. Professional, stylish, contemporary. One thing it should be is unique individual able to stand alone.

Why do we then cheapen all we have worked so hard  for? We compromise put ourselves down cheapen all we have created by offering discounts why? Do we not believe in our selves has our vision changed? What does discounting really say about your brand? Maybe it suggests struggling and are desperate for your business? Rather than professional creative talented styling team. Offering the highest standard of skill and service at competitive rates.

What would appeal more you? What would appear the more professional image and approach? We have to consider these questions if we are to really address this discount mentality.

Consider that competition is not a good thing at the best of times. Competition in the salon cause tension as a pecking order or level of seniority is established. This create issues of over inflated EGO. It’s negative. Consider are position or status titles that important to an environment of sharing in salon one that is more focused on mentoring and collaboration a meeting of the minds communicating sharing of opinions open innovative discussions  a sharing of that vision. Not that mentality built on who’s the best! Competing with salons around you to see who can go the lowest to attract the most is just wrong. It’s crazy! it’s a no win market . Its a market where up selling is recommending and being professionalnot just being a sales person!

Think about your Brand how can you create a niche market?

Think about your vision surround your self with people who share it?

Think about the salon image ? What do you really want it to say ?

Think about your reputation ? What is that worth?

Think about that Street appeal ? Those tacky photo copies?[ As predicted the salon below went bust!]

As a Freelance or mobile stylist. Who do you want to connect with cater for?

It’s only when we really honestly consider these issues that we can really start to see the folly in a discount driven mentality and market. We have a salon we have a price list .Then we have a huge sign saying 30% off or we plaster the window in discount offers to the point that no one can see in to observe what the salon is doing. What it offers, enabling the potential client to get a feel for what is being presented. See in get that feeling of whats going on allows the client to think about wanting to be part of it!

We fill the window with products we are not first and foremost a retail product store we certainly go get paid to display these products in our window promoting the manufacturer product promotion affiliation to any one manufacturer can be risky. Always cary different product lines to appeal to a wider audience don’t be owned by or dictated to by any one company be your own boss make your own choice sand decisions. We have to buy  products we  to stock them as inventory  only then can we re sell them consider until sold its profit sitting on a shelf or in a display. Who is benefiting from this the manufacturer you have paid form them now you displaying them my point!

Don’t over stock on retail. Educate staff on product knowledge and retailing products this is part of Good service part of the consultation.

Product knowledge classes in house training [PK] if freelance make sure you are still keeping current with your knowledge of products coming to market

We can only re sell them by recommending them to our clients. To do this we have to get then into the salon. If we have discounted our rates right down then why would they pay full price for products?

Be it a salon or freelance business model set the price for your services to cater for and attract the clientele you want do not then discount this down this only serves to project that you not worth what you were charging ! Offering discounts attract people looking for deals and discounts !

This is mostly common sense  but some where along the way we have got lost we have been sucked in to this business model  that is so from our vision that we falter. We get over whelmed we feel lost consumed. All of these salon’s are in the same town all within a few minute wool of each other  you can see in trying to appeal they all look the same. It does not work .It’s tacky!!!!!

Take a step back be honest. What do you really want? How can you get back to your vision? Why did this happen?  Maybe you need a little help or advise? Would you like to discuss your situation ? If so let me know. See contact section. Having vision having focus having the courage to ask for or seek out help either a mentor or a professional consultant or look into a training program, have a personal development strategy and invest in your self your business your team your future.

The ‘Three R’s’
”Reputation. Recommendation. Retention”.
It’s not built on that constant looking for new clients it’s looking after what you have! It’s investing in your self and your business and those around you.

This journey. This career, is wonderful – Challenging. Inspiring and yes can and will be hard work. but the rewards are worth all the effort.
Thank you all for letting me share some thoughts with you today. These are inspirational, passionate, industry professionals. They have a vision. These are the people I want on my bus to learn from, share with, take a journey with. Get inspired. Connect with driven motivated industry professional. challenge your self. invest in ones /your self

Are you driver or passenger !

There are no guarantees in life and ones career and career choice is no different thing happen and its how we deal with them that defines us. Jobs change relationships come and go the one thing that remains after training is our skill both hands on creative and the ones we learn about people and communication about caring about being a team player. Constantly developing new skills staying current is so very important.

I also think that we need to always look at the Why. Ask the question Why are we in business whats it for? OrWhy do we want to go into to business what is success? Why do I suggest this I think by asking and exploring the why we get to the motive behind why we want to be in business what is true success. Why the will also help us to understand our true values this in turn helps us to follow the path to the success we want  and desire. It will help us to surround ourselves with the right team those who share our values and vision.

Remember. Salon success. Stylist success. Business success are all linked together it’s Team success. Its never about any destination only ever about a journey taking the right people on that journey makes it enjoyable maybe even fun!
