Stylist Salon owner. A strategy for success

Hair dressers. Colour technicians. Educators .Platform artists. Freelance or mobile.

What motivates us all ? What drives and inspires us into any career is it really vocational a  true calling? What are our expectations? How many of us have a vision and goal a true planned career path with expectation for success and reward? As stylist and salon owners working in this creative diverse sometimes challenging industry we have to have a strategy a career path. This does of course have to be open open and acceptable to change as nothing is ever carved in stone. Career development salon and business development are the areas we have plan for and focus on for future success for both salon stylist and business or organisation.

What areas do we have to think about when planning for development growth and success be it personal, salon, staff, team or business. Before we can plan our future we need to think about where we are at? What contributed to getting to this point be in business choices, personal choices, external influences. We then have to be prepared to accept responsibility for choices made decisions taken.

We have to be able to reflect on our initial vision and goals to be able to see if we are on track or wondering from our chosen path be it personal or business.

There is no fault to attribute. Yes taking some responsibility for choices made is necessary at the same time many external factors can and do effect plans and strategy .We have to be able to have the courage to make change happen, having the foresight and the vision to face challenges.

The biggest thing that holds us all back is “Fear” and  ourselves as salon owners, business owners and individual stylists to grow and thrive reach our full potential and have greater success we have to be prepared to be honest about where we are at in our career. What our weaknesses are. Where we need help and advice. This can is is very hard for may of us. Lets be honest about what holds us back when we peel back all the layer of self doubt. We have to be honest about to what we are prepared to do.

What lengths we will go to to move forward this includes, risk awareness maybe doing a S.W.O.T Analysis would be the place to start [ if interested a full chapter on this in my Book “The Salon and the S word”    this might just get over hurdles help you to do a  review of personal commitment forward going plan. All of this is possible the hardest part is realising that help is needed. Asking for help taking the steps required and suggested when working with others. What hold us back be it business, salon or stylist that word again Fear! When we face up to this we have taken a huge step forward. When we seek out help when we ask for help when we commit and work towards a new strategy then we start to make change happen. When we take action. When we embrace change then things will start to shift.

Do nothing can only have one result:

None of this is easy or is free but it’s so very worth while in so many cases a fresh set of eyes, someone listening to your thoughts sharing your vision seeing a new way forward, seeing where mistakes were made or wrong decisions where taken is how things can get back on track. It is so easy for us all to look at a problem and keep seeing the same old solutions or no solution in this instance we just keep putting a band aid over the issue and so it never fixed it never heals! We only ever get one chance to make that first impression, the choices and decision we all make always come with the taking of responsibility however well they work out, re-search those choices plan that strategy plan so that your business your team all succeed. What are you ready to do???

The question is? Is this you could this be your salon? If so what are you going to do about are you willing to embark on making a new challenging chapter of change taking some hard decisions taking constructive advice and guidance. Are you as a stylist as a salon or business ready to do work supported and guided all the way.

The ‘Three R’s’
”Reputation. Recommendation. Retention”.
It’s not built on that constant looking for new clients it’s looking after what you have! It’s investing in your self and your business and those around you.

I also think that we need to always look at the Why. Ask the question Why are we in business whats it for? OrWhy do we want to go into to business what is success? Why do I suggest this I think by asking and exploring the why we get to the motive behind why we want to be in business what is true success. Why the will also help us to understand our true values this in turn helps us to follow the path to the success we want  and desire. It will help us to surround ourselves with the right team those who share our values and vision.
