This topic is worthy of both discussion and thought for it effects each and every one involved in the Hairdressing Industry.

Having Spent a number of years involved in Sales and education or is it? Education and sales: It’s so hard to know for one supports the other. [ chicken and egg what comes first] 

One side sales drives the education machine funding allowing technicians and educators into salons to share and demonstrate. On the other hand without the support of good education and educator salon sales can go flat.

Salons. Stylist lose interest they start to use products incorrectly getting bad results blaming the product! It is my view that if you really trust and have belief in a product it will sell it self. If your educated a product how and why it works. If you have a passion for it, it’s easy to talk about it sells it self.

 

Why so much pressure on sales why fear education?

In salons many stylist hate education up dates. They look at educators as know it all’s Some stylist may attempt to put an educator down show them up in some cases resent them Why ? FEAR ! Fear of what ! normally these types are the salon know it all or at least they think they do! Often not the case so Ego can be so destructive.

Most salons change colour lines because of dissatisfaction with the product. If it does not perform well in reality the fault is with the stylist technician. But hey! It’s always easier to blame a product than take an honest look in the mirror! Tuff harsh words but true. I don’t know how many salons I’ve visited that so need education support but the staff the manager will not allow it. I also think that many sales representatives have very little respect for what a good passionate educator can do product knowledge classes or in house training vents can make such a difference to a salon.

Why because they fear letting any one see that they don’t know everything! who does? The fact is Sales are Sales. Education is just educating on how to correctly use and get the best out of the product that sharing knowledge giving support to the salon to the sales person to the staff this can only serve to improve. Standards. Skill. Knowledge. Why all the problems? Ego, Insecurity, Fear? or just an un daunting need for control!  All things that are rife in society but for some reason really run rampant in the Hair beauty industry.

We have salon managers and owners who fear educating there staff to much. We have staff who hate to admit they have an issues or don’t understand. Will not admit that they want or need more education, skill and knowledge. We have professional Colour companies who market them selves with being professional. But flood the market with home colour kits. With little or no care for the effect on the high street salon The stylist trying to make a living build up a clientele not to mention the damage long term use can do from use of home colour.Building  passionate committed team that works together an want education is key to success.

Colour Companies that offer education to some to degree but maybe not fully transparent when it comes to formulation ! Some maybe not totally honest about all the chemistry of any given product need to know bases! Misleading.  Do your own re search there are still some amazing profession manufactures out there.

We have schools Colleges, Academy’s. All offering a level of training but! How qualified? How up to date are those trainers? How much do they really care? How skilled are they? How current are they? How they look! How professional are they/

 

We have young people coming into the industry with a false idea of how successful they can be. How much there is to learn. How long it takes to be a success. We have Stylist who reach a level of qualification and then sit back knowing everything knowing nothing? Why is this? So many skills to learn so many tools to understand. So many techniques to keep up with. We all need to constantly look for new inspiration new challenges.

We have all these different governing bodies have you ever tried contacting them to ask for a meeting or some information? good luck with that one. Am I out spoken? Well maybe but it’s done it’s said to create discussion, to open up debate, to see who really cares! Not to be politically correct.We have to raise questions to find answers.

 

I have over the years worked with  many like minded passionate industry professional and they are all of the mind that things could be better standards raised, knowledge shared. education improved so what can we do how can we make a difference?

 

How can we encourage an exchange of knowledge and information. disclosing of product information in an open transparent manner.  One with sales teams working with and supporting education. Stylist who constantly want to up-date. Teachers trainers. Who really care how to encourage the young stylist to have higher standards, skill, who pride themselves in levels of Service and consultation. This is possible by net working sharing reaching out. We have so many mediums available to us  this is such a huge multifaceted Industry. It’s exciting vibrant. It’s constantly growing, changing evolving, whilst at the same time standing still.

Service – The word that everyone talks about and is fundamental to everything we do. We know what bad service is, but how do you measure good service? What do our customers want, what do they expect? What are your standards like, could you improve?

Sales & selling – If you can sell; you are likely to do well if you cannot, you won’t go far. Who are our customers, where do they come from? How do we identify our own target market and capitalize on the relationship? Do you know the principles of merchandising and want to set-up your own retail ‘one-stop-shop’?

Suppliers – Your purchases affect your profits, so the less you spend, the more you earn. How do you maximize the relationship with your supplier? How do you achieve better deals and discounts with your suppliers? How do you compete against the big shops and stores?

Staff – As an employer, the people that work with you, should work for you; but how often do they seem to be doing their ‘own thing’? Are you getting the best from them, could they be more efficient, effective and productive?

It’s not built on that constant looking for new clients it’s looking after what you have! It’s investing in your self and your business and those around you.

This journey, this career, is wonderful – challenging, inspiring, and yes, hard work.

Leadership
Our industry is in constant change and is sometimes criticised. For lacking vision in some areas. However there is an ever growing body of professionals. That have a firm commitment to our industry, they have a passion for change, to raise standards through education and sharing. Leadership, education and team incentives.Will over time and with commitment give any individual that ability to do exceptional work and to be more creative. Leadership and management help create an amazing work environment for all concerned. So key for success for all concerned.
Conclusion
This journey. This career, is wonderful – Challenging. Inspiring and yes can and will be hard work. but the rewards are worth all the effort.

Are you driver or passenger !

 There are no guarantees in life and ones career and career choice is no different thing happen and its how we deal with them that defines us. Jobs change relationships come and go the one thing that remains after training is our skill both hands on creative and the ones we learn about people and communication about caring about being a team player. Constantly developing new skills staying current is so very important.

I also think that we need to always look at the WhyAsk the question Why are we in business whats it for? OrWhy do we want to go into to business what is success? Why do I suggest this I think by asking and exploring the why we get to the motive behind why we want to be in business what is true success. Why the will also help us to understand our true values this in turn helps us to follow the path to the success we want  and desire. It will help us to surround ourselves with the right team those who share our values and vision.

Remember. Salon success. Stylist success. Business success are all linked together it’s Team success. Its never about any destination only ever about a journey taking the right people on that journey makes it enjoyable maybe even fun!
